KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 (Bernama) -- Ten Malaysian students are leaving for South Korea tonight to pursue five-year undergraduate courses.
Earlier today, the South Korean Government gave them scholarships worth about RM3 million for the courses.
The students are Attiya Mokhtar (chemical engineering), Kyle Tan Jin Soon (biotechnology), Ng Li Yuen (architecture), Nurul Afiqah Abu Bakar (performing arts), Yiaw Siew Hui (genetics), Ayla Farihah Mohd Bohari and Yeo Sheak Li (Korean language and literature), while Mahzaton Aqma Abu Talip, Muhammad Amirul Ariff Mohd Yusoff and Abdullah Umar Raslie will pursue mechanical engineering.
The Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Choi Dong- Gyou, said each scholarship was worth RM60, 000 annually.
"It covers a five-year course, including a one-year course on the Korean language and four years of undergraduate course.
"Each scholarship includes round-trip airfare, monthly allowance, settlement and repatriation allowance, language training expenses, medical insurance and tuition fees," Choi said when presenting the scholarships to the students at the embassy here.
Upon completion of the course, he said the students were allowed to apply for courses of their choice in universities in South Korea such as Seoul National University and Yonsei University.
Meanwhile, Choi said South Korean President Lee Myung Bak announced the 'New Asia Initiatives' in emphasising the importance of extending cooperation to ASEAN countries.
"Among the 10 ASEAN member countries, Malaysia has the most number of scholarship recipients," he said.
He hoped the scholarships would promote education exchanges and friendship between Malaysia and South Korea.
